  • Thoughts from Afar Pt 1

    Forever ? ? ?

He carved their names into a bench to show how much he loved her.  Was it a symbol that his love would last forever?  Was it a sign that their love was true for now?  You have to wonder if Ivonne still loves Dan.  I wonder if the smile on her face that met Dan's in '96 still remains when she thinks of him today.  Have they become forever two names carved in a table?  Are they just a moment caught in time for strangers to wonder about as they eat their lunch and continue on their journey?  For if carving made love permanent, surely fewer marriages would fail and more childhood sweethearts would remain together forever. . .

  • Life Before the Net

    The Net

Sometimes life and art coincide . . . today's photogamer challenge was to take a picture of the Internet.  Today at work we were talking about the evolution of the computer.  I mentioned that the first computer was so large that it took up an entire room and could basically add long strings of numbers.  An astute 13 year old said, "It couldn't even connect to the internet?!"    Yes, it's true, for all of you out there who don't remember there was life before the net . . . and some of us are old enough to remember it.

  • Through Clouded Glass

I had a blog-worthy thought as I was posting my pictures for the Photogamer daily photo challenge. (I have had other bog-worthy thoughts in the past few months, just little time to blog about them . . . please forgive me.) Today's photo was supposed to be of a lightbulb, any lightbulb. And, as usual, I thought to myself, "what is the most interesting looking light bulb that I have access too." Most of the lamps in my house have a run of the mill 60 watter which I have photographed for photogamer before so I felt compelled to look further. And here is the result . . .

    Through Clouded Glass

I knew the porch light was dirty, but not that dirty!  And so instead of the clear pictures of flame-shaped light bulbs that I had envisioned, I ended up with blurred bulbs and dirty glass.  It kind of reminds me of the way we see the world sometimes.  It is so easy to get caught up in the day to day and taking care of the dirt that seems to be flung directly in our face.  But in the process of focusing so much energy on ourselves, the way we see the world is changed.  Instead of seeing others clearly, we only see them through the dirty glass of our own problems.  I am sure we all miss many opportunities to celebrate the world because we are just too busy to clean the glass.

And yes, for those of you who were concerned, I did clean the porch light . . . or at least the part that I was taking pictures through.

  • A Time for Everything

"There is a time for everything, and a season for every activity under heaven:
a time to be born and a time to die,
a time to plant and a time to uproot,
a time to kill and a time to heal,
a time to tear down and a time to build,
a time to weep and a time to laugh,
a time to mourn and a time to dance,
a time to scatter stones and a time to gather them,
a time to embrace and a time to refrain,
a time to search and a time to give up,
a time to keep and a time to throw away,
a time to tear and a time to mend,
a time to be silent and a time to speak,
a time to love and a time to hate,
a time for war and a time for peace."
    Ecclesiastes 3:1-8

And then there are the times in all of our lives where all these times seem to come at once. The past few months have been non-stop in good ways and in bad.  And through it all I know that the words that follow these are also true . . .

"What does the worker gain for his toil? I have seen the burden God has laid on men. He has made everything beautiful in its time. He has set eternity on the hearts of men; but they cannot fathom what God has done from beginning to end. I know that there is nothing better for men than to be happy and do good while they live. That everyone may eat and drink, and find satisfaction in all his toil -- this is the gift of God. I know that everything God does will endure forever; nothing can be added to it and nothing taken from it. God does it so that men will revere him."
    Ecclesiastes 3:9-14

May we remember in all the chaos that life brings that the only things that stand for all time are God's. May we remember to look for the wisdom of His hand at work in every aspect of our lives, whatever the season.
